How we handle smoke odor removal
1We look for where the smell sits
Smoke works into anything porous: drywall, bare wood, insulation, carpet and cloth. We go through the rooms, the closets and the attic with you and put what we find into an itemized scope.
2Belongings that hold smoke go out
Clothes, bedding, sofas and rugs take in smoke and keep giving it off. Left in place, they put the smell back into a cleaned room. We pack those out, clean them and hold them until the house is ready.
3We clean what we can and remove the rest
Smoke and soot cleanup and structure cleaning take on the residue behind the smell. What holds too much of it, such as burned drywall or smoke-soaked insulation, we list for fire debris removal.
4Deodorization, then the rebuild

Questions about smoke odor removal

Can I paint over the smoke smell?
Paint on its own is a cover, and covers tend to fail. Smoke residue under ordinary paint can come back through as a yellow stain and give off odor again when the wall warms up. The residue has to come off before anything goes over it.
Why does the smell get stronger on hot or humid days?
The source is still in the materials, and warm, damp air can draw more odor out of it. A house can smell fine on a cool morning and smoky by afternoon. The smell can also return when the air conditioning pushes air through ducts that carried smoke.
We have stopped noticing the smell. Does that mean it is gone?
Not always. A nose gets used to a smell it lives with, so the people in the house are often the last to notice. Ask a friend who has not been inside, or see what you smell when you walk back in after time away.
Our house sits on pier and beam. Can the smell come from under the floor?
It can. In an older pier-and-beam house in the capital's central neighborhoods, a crawl space sits under a wood floor. If smoke got down there, bare joists and subfloor can hold it, and air from below can carry the smell up between the boards. So we look under the floor too.
Does insurance cover smoke odor removal if nothing in my house burned?
It can. Many policies count smoke as damage in its own right, whether it started in your kitchen or down the road. We talk with your insurance company about it, and your insurance company decides what your policy covers.
